Family Bird Walk

We hope you’ll join us for the 50th commemoration of the Civil Rights Movement’s most pivotal year, and walk in the footsteps of those brave souls who changed the world forever. Living History at Turkey Creek


As part of its ongoing public education programs @ Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, BSC's Southern Environmental Center is partnering with Turkey Creek Long Rifles on a series of Living History demonstration weekends in 2013. Pinson Purchases Property
The city of Pinson has plans to purchase the property behind Rite Aid, Big 10 Tire and Winn Dixie. Value of the land is  $700,000.  Pinson will purchase the land for $262,000. On Wednesday, January 16, 2013, the computer system for all libraries in Jefferson County will be down for the day for maintenance.

Rudd Middle School Theatre Department will have their Dinner Theatre on December 22, 2012, with dinner beginning at 6:00p.m. and the play beginning at 7:00p.m. The play will be “The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever.”

The Recycling trailer is still available and located in its original location on Pinson City Hall property. Often asked is, “What items are acceptable for the recycling trailer?” An article taken from the Turkey Creek Facebook page answers this question.

Confusion about Recycling Trailer

Thank you Pinson, for making the Recycling Trailer such a huge success! Since May of this year, volunteer workers have taken a full trailer to be recycled every week. This unexpected outpouring of support has been wonderful. However, there has been some confusion about what items and materials are accepted. On each receptacle, guidelines for acceptable materials have been posted. Please, take a moment and review those so that we can successfully recycle the items brought to the trailer. When unsorted or unacceptable items are deposited, they will not be recycled and they make the task of delivery more difficult. Here are some quick guidelines to go by:

Accepted Paper: Cardboard and Office paper ONLY (no food contaminated items or wet paper)

Accepted Plastic: Plastic bottles and Jugs

Aluminum Cans only; no steel cans (can food or dog food cans)

DO NOT BRING: Plastic Bags, Aluminum Foil/pans, or Styrofoam

We realize that the trailer fills up quickly, but please, do not leave items outside of the trailer. Also, as a space saving effort, please, crush boxes, cans, and plastic containers.

Every week, volunteers happily take time out of their week to deliver your recycling items. Please support their efforts by using the trailer responsibly and properly. Your support will go a long way towards making the difficult task of delivering your materials much easier. • Tot Time with Mrs. Eve: Gingerbread Houses at Avondale Library  Dec 10, 2012 . Gingerbread Houses 1, 2, 3. Gingerbread houses are so yummy. Calling all architects, this week we are making gingerbread houses that are fun to look at and really good to eat! • Birmingham Science Cafe: Discover the Ice Age in Alabama at Hart and Soul Coffee. December 11, 2012. A Science Café brings the general public face-to-face with scientists in the comfortable atmosphere of a neighborhood hang-out. Join other science geeks (or science novices) for an exciting presentation, lively discussion and a little science trivia. All Science Cafes are free to the public and no science background is required!   Samford Planetarium Presents 'Star of Bethlehem', December 10-December 14, 2012 The popular multimedia presentation, "The Star of Bethlehem," will be shown nightly December 10-14 in Samford University's Christenberry Planetarium. The hour-long show will begin at 7 p.m.    The presentation addresses evidence that could explain a natural cause of the famous star referenced in the New Testament gospel of Matthew.
  Admission is free. All ages are welcome, but the show is more suitable for age 8 and above.
• Christmas Bird Count at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve December 15, 2012  at 8:30 am. Jamie Nobles, bird enthusiast from the Birmingham Zoo, will lead us on the Christmas Bird Count bird watching hike. Winter is a perfect time to see birds because of the lack of foliage on the trees. This hike is open to all levels of birders, from beginners to experienced, and all levels in between. Not only will we identify birds by sight, but we will also learn the common calls of several birds.
