The Recycling trailer is still available and located in its original location on Pinson City Hall property. Often asked is, “What items are acceptable for the recycling trailer?” An article taken from the Turkey Creek Facebook page answers this question.

Confusion about Recycling Trailer

By Charles Yeager TCNP

Thank you Pinson, for making the Recycling Trailer such a huge success! Since May of this year, volunteer workers have taken a full trailer to be recycled every week. This unexpected outpouring of support has been wonderful. However, there has been some confusion about what items and materials are accepted. On each receptacle, guidelines for acceptable materials have been posted. Please, take a moment and review those so that we can successfully recycle the items brought to the trailer. When unsorted or unacceptable items are deposited, they will not be recycled and they make the task of delivery more difficult. Here are some quick guidelines to go by:

Accepted Paper: Cardboard and Office paper ONLY (no food contaminated items or wet paper)

Accepted Plastic: Plastic bottles and Jugs

Aluminum Cans only; no steel cans (can food or dog food cans)

DO NOT BRING: Plastic Bags, Aluminum Foil/pans, or Styrofoam

We realize that the trailer fills up quickly, but please, do not leave items outside of the trailer. Also, as a space saving effort, please, crush boxes, cans, and plastic containers.

Every week, volunteers happily take time out of their week to deliver your recycling items. Please support their efforts by using the trailer responsibly and properly. Your support will go a long way towards making the difficult task of delivering your materials much easier. If you have any questions about accepted materials, or would like to help with this effort, please, send an email to cyeager@bsc.edu

NOVEMBER 2012

October 6th presented itself as a cool crisp autumn morning. Neighbors rose early to ready themselves for the Heather Pointe Community Yard Sale. Though competing with numerous yard sales in the surrounding area, neighbors stated that they received some yard sale traffic. Some yard sale customers were on their way to the Butterbean Festival and took a detour to check out the offerings in Heather Pointe.

Photos from October's yard sale.

Outcome of runoff election
According to al.com  George (Robbie) Roberts won  city council place 3 in the October 9th run off election.
Remember our Veteran's
Veterans Day in 2012 is on Sunday, the 11th of November.

In the United States, Veterans Day is usually observed on November 11. However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated.

In 2012, Veterans Day falls on a Sunday, so Monday, the 12th of November is considered a federal holiday.

Thanksgiving is November 22, 2012

Pinson Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony will be held November 30, 2012, 7:00pm at Triangle Park. There will be cookies , hot chocolate and Christmas music performed by local school choirs.

Christmas Parade  in Pinson takes place December 8, 2012 at 2:00 pm. The parade begins at Pinson Valley High School and continues down highway 75 South to Triangle Park. Interested participants may fill out and submit a form to Pinson City Hall by December 3, 2012.

East Pinson Valley Recreation Center opened November 3rd. It has an Olympic size swimming pool, a gymnasium, an exercise room, meeting rooms and other amenities. Before becoming a recreation center, the building was the home of the Jefferson State Community College Physical Education Department.

Numerous families have signed up to participate.  You can  generate more traffic directly to your merchandise by sending in a list of your goods and your address (Last day to list items on  YARD SALE page will be  Wednesday, October 3rd, 12 noon). I will place this information on the YARD SALE  page in the sidebar to the right. If you didn't sign up for the sale you are still welcomed to participate.

The sale is being advertised now. That may cause some buyers to come to your door days before the sale. I would caution you to beware as this may be a person with unscrupulous motives.  Don't be caught off guard. Remember there is safety in numbers. Sell on Sale day.

By the same token, be prepared for early birds, those that are serious yard salers and want to beat the crowd to purchase items you may have. By waiting until the day of the yard sale you are more likely to be organized and prepared for potential sales.
If you've never participated in a yard sale get tips by Googling the words, "yard sale tips" .

May your trash turn into treasure.

JULY 2012

WHETHER your home is heated by gas or electricity you probably received the above pamphlet from Trussville Utilities. Since Heather Pointe’s utilities are underground it’s important to take precautions even when planting a tree or a shrub.

It’s essential to be informed in case of a natural gas emergency.

There are three ways to detect a natural gas leak.

LOOK-If you see blowing dirt, bubbling creeks or ponds, dry spots in moist areas or dead plants surrounded by live green plants there could be a problem

LISTEN- A hissing sound near gas lines or appliances may indicate a natural gas leak

SMELL- Natural gas is odorless BUT, utility companies add a substance called mercaptan which has a rotten-egg odor so that humans can detect if there is a gas leak.

IF YOU DETECT A LEAK leave the area immediately.

Don’t try to find it or stop it.

Do not smoke, use any type of phone, turn lights either on or off, or operate any appliances

AFTER LEAVING THE AREA Call 205-655-3211 or 1-800-755-3211

CARBON MONOXIDE poisoning can occur if a natural gas appliance is operated in an enclosed space that has no access to fresh air. Unlike natural gas treated with mercaptan, carbon monoxide has no odor. Early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning resemble flu like symptoms, ie. headache, dizziness and/or nausea. Get fresh air immediately. If you purchase a carbon monoxide detector be sure it meets the UL Standard 2034.

Gas line markers give only GENERAL locations and specifications.

That is why it is important to CALL BEFORE YOU DIG. You must contact Alabama One Call by dialing  811 at least two days before you plan to dig, drill, excavate or move earth in any way.  Hitting an underground utility line could  be devastating not only to you but also to those around you.

PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE
With approval from the Heather Pointe HOA, Sylvia P. McClain has piloted a Public Relations Committee. A desire to have a more involved community is what prompted this idea. This project is separate and does not fall under the Heather Pointe Association umbrella. At this time the most important element is to contact  Sylvia (mpgs324@gmail.com ) when a new neighbor whether buying or leasing moves into the neighborhood. Two people from the committee would go by the home, introduce themselves, welcome the newcomer and present them with a plant and a small booklet or door hanger regarding Heather Pointe and other pertinent information.

You’re probably saying, “No one welcomed me when I moved in.” I too had that experience. The past couple of years I have tried to make a conscious effort to greet any newcomers on my block and welcome them. This does not mean we become bosom buddies or have a revolving door to our homes. The welcome is merely a gesture of kindness. Not everyone is amenable. Some people are very reserved. Once I detect this or am told I keep a wide berth respecting their privacy.

If our community is to thrive involvement will be a key aspect. Communities deteriorate when no one cares. Other project thoughts include Community Garage Sale, Community Clean up Day, Neighborhood Night Out, Walking Group.

If you are interested in participating or have ideas for activities contact Sylvia P. McClain mpgs324@gmail.com

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. (wikipedia)

July 4th conjures up visions of cookouts, water sports, fireworks and heat. The oppressive heat has caused much of outdoor vegetation to become dry. The rain of July 2nd didn’t provide enough saturation to guard against the potential of grass and brush fires. Exercise caution during your holiday activities.

Have a Safe and Happy July 4th

Proceeds from the races benefit the Preserve’s environmental education and youth outreach programs.
